This is a lit of POP3 Errors which you may come across when using Microsoft Outlook. To find a specific error code, press CTRL+F and type it into the search bar.


0x800420CB - Mail cannot be stored on server

  1. Remove any duplicate mail accounts.
  2. If Outlook Express is in use, close the program and rename Outbox.dbx. Open Outlook and try again.
  3. Repeat step 2 with a reboot before you check your mail again.

0x8004210A - The operation timed out waiting for a response from the receiving (POP) server

  1. Restart the computer, and make sure to disable any firewalls. This will solve the issue in 9 out of 10 cases
  2. If not, run Windows Update, and ensure the computer is running the latest version of Windows
  3. Refer to the registry edit listed under More Information, in this Microsoft Knowledge Base Article (Outlook 2002 only)

0x8004210B - The operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server.

  1. Restart the computer, and make sure to disable any firewalls. This will solve the issue in 9 out of 10 cases
  2. If not, run Windows Update, and ensure the computer is running the latest version of Windows

0x800CCC90 - Client response invalid

  1. Recheck account information (mail servers and login information) and check if login details are case sensitive.
  2. Recreate the mail account.
  3. Test login via telnet to the mail server. If successful, the problem lies within Outlook. If not, check for any firewall software and try a TCP/IP reset. Win9x and higher can do this from the network control panel applet. You NEED your Win9x .cab files, CD, or disks to do this. If you can telnet in and the customer is continuously receiving the same email(s), this email(s) will need to be removed via webmail for the customer to receive any more emails.

0x800CCC91 - Invalid user name or user not found

  1. Recheck account information (mail servers and login information) and check if login details are case sensitive.

0x800CCC92 - Password not valid for account

0x800CCC93 - Unable to interpret response

  1. You may have a corrupt or a very large file attachment on the mailserver. Large file attachments, mail that are missing headers, or mail that do not conform to the mail RFC's can cause this. You can check this by logging in via Webmail.
  2. Test login via telnet to the mail server. If successful, the problem lies within Outlook.
  3. Disable any antivirus or firewall software.

0x800CCC97 - Message ID out of range

  1. Check for any mail outages.
