Email (or Electronic Mail) is one of the most common forms of electronic communication. It is a system that allows people to compose, send, store and receive messages over the internet. Because messages can be sent or received almost instantly and for virtually no cost, email is a popular way of doing business, sharing information and staying in touch.
Email Glossary
- Email Address: Your unique address that can be given to others so they may send you email. Your email address is composed of a name chosen by, or assigned to you, then the @ symbol (pronounced "at"), followed by the address of your email provider. For example, most Westnet members have an email address like username@westnet.com.au
- Email Client: The application or program you use to send and receive email. Outlook Express is a commonly used email client
- Inbox: Where your emails are stored on your computer
- Address Book: Where your contacts are kept. Most email clients have an address book feature
- Recipient: The person to which you are sending email
- Bounce: When an email is returned to you because of an error, it is called a "bounced" email
