Basic  Information

Email headers provide metadata on an email, including how it has been routed, to whom it was addressed, and what type of body and attachments it contains.

Email headers are not normally displayed by email clients (although parts of them are used to fill information like the From: field), but they can be useful in troubleshooting email issues, including identifying the source of spam. See below for detailed instructions on how to reveal the full headers in many popular email programs.

Please Note: Headers cannot be retrieved through the webmail service at this time.

Forwarding headers

Normally, if you just use the Forward button to send an email to a new recipient, the email headers will be lost (only the body is forwarded). For instructions on forwarding a whole email intact, see Forward As Attachment.

Problems with headers

What happens if headers appear in the body of an email, instead of being interpreted in the background by the mail client? One possible cause is an incompatibility with Outlook 2003 and Microsoft Windows Vista.

See this Microsoft article for the solution: Outlook 2003 hotfix package: April 22, 2008
