Menus are an easy way of sorting the information on your site, and can allow your visitors to quickly and easily locate the content they are interested in.

Information from the menus you create can appear in the navigation bar provided with the theme, included in a Sidebar using a specific Widget, or even in the footer of your page.

Adding items to the menu is as simple as ticking the boxes next to the items you wish to add, and clicking "Add to Menu".

Those items will be added to the bottom of the menu in the order they appeared on the left, as the main menu options.

Some menu items can have extra settings set, like links, however most options can only be set once an item has been added to your menu.

The following items you can add to a menu are:

  • Pages
    • These are the most common form of menu items, as they link to a page you have created.
    • You can change the words as they appear in the menu once it has been added, if you need to shorten it for any reason for instance.
  • Links
    • These are the next common menu items.
  • Categories
    • Create a category for your posts, and you will be able to show a menu item for that category.
    • This is useful if you create a news or blog category for instance.
  • Posts
    • Link to a specific post directly from the menu
    • May be best to link to a specific category, as the posts themselves may become outdated
  • Tags
    • Add a link to the menu that will show the same information as searching for the tag would.
    • Would be best to use categories as tags and search results may not be fully accurate.
  • Format
    • Display a menu item that will link to a page of posts that fit the selected format - similar to category.

Some themes and plugins may add new types of posts, such as Products or Artworks, which you can enable and show in the menu.

Click Screen options in the top right corner of the screen to enable or disable the type of menu items you can select.
