WordPress is a Content Management System (CMS).
What this means is that once the theme has been selected, you can easily adjust the content displayed on certain pages.
Changing the theme will also retain any content that has been saved, however it will try to adjust the style of each page or post to match the rest of the site.

You can adjust most WordPress settings, and create Posts, pages, Menus, and Widgets by visiting the menu items on the left, once logged into WordPress.

Posts

A Post is a quick update, similar to a news feed or blog, where you will generally submit a small to moderate amount of text, and possibly an image.

Creating Categories

A Category allows you to sort your posts, and display different types of posts on different pages. You can add a Post to multiple categories.

It is normally a good practice to create the category you are going to use, before creating posts, however you can always change which category a post appears in later.

To create and view Categories, click Categories on the left hand menu, under Posts.

You can view more information about Creating Categories here.

Adding a Post

Adding a post is as simple as typing in what you want it to say.

To add a new post, Click Add New on the left hand menu, under Posts.

You can view more information on how to add a post here.

Pages

A Page is a usually a main feature or your website, and normally contains static information that will always be relevent.

Pages are normally used for displaying certain information for your website, or providing contact options/forms, and are normally included in menus and site maps.

Opposed to Posts, Pages usually contain more information, and are sometimes formatted to include lists or tables.

Adding a Page

Adding a page is as simple as creating a post.

To add a new page, Click Add New on the left hand menu, under Pages.

You can view more information about creating pages here.

Inserting Content

Wordpress allows 2 main ways to save your content to your site and they are the View (WYSIWYG) and Text (HTML) modes. They may appear differently depending on your theme and plugins, however these are the two main types on Editors.

View/WYSIWYG Editor

Clicking on the View tab shows the WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor. Changes that you make here, are approximately what you will see on the website when viewing the post or page.

Text/HTML Editor

Clicking on the Text tab shows the plain Text/HTML code used to show your information on the page.

Adding Images

As well as adding a featured image, you can add smaller images into your pages or posts to supplement the text, or a large image that you can use to display your information.

Having small images with text may be better, as it will be easier to edit if anything changes or becomes outdated.

To add images, ensure the cursor is in the Content area, where you would like your image to appear, and click the Add Media button on the left (between the Title and Content areas).

You can view more information about inserting media here.

Menus

Menus are an easy way of sorting the information on your site, and can allow your visitors to quickly and easily locate the content they are interested in.

Information from the menus you create can appear in the navigation bar provided with the theme, included in a Sidebar using a specific Widget, or even in the footer of your page.

You can create as many menus as you like and decide which ones you want displayed, and if you want links to each page you create to be added automatically. You can have more than one menu for your main navigation, and easily swap between the two by visiting Manage Locations when viewing or editing your menus.

Creating Menus

Menus can be accessed by going to Appearance on the left hand side, and clicking Menus.

Wordpress should have at least one menu for the main navigation bar, and some themes may create other menus when they are installed.

To create a new menu click Create a new menu along the top. Give your menu a name, so you can tell it apart from the others, and click create menu.

Adding Menu Items

Adding items to the menu is as simple as ticking the boxes next to the items you wish to add, and clicking "Add to Menu".

Those items will be added to the bottom of the menu in the order they appeared on the left, as the main menu options.

Widgets

Some content that appears on your website may be set by using a widget. This is normally the content that appears on most pages (if not all of them).

This varies with the theme that is active at the time, however the concept is similar across most themes.

The most common types of information you can adjust by using Widgets, is the sidebar, and footer of your website.

The Widgets page is separated into 3 main sections. Available Widgets, Active Widgets, and Inactive Widgets.

Active Widgets

The Active Widgets section doesn't have a main title like the Available Widgets and Inactive Widgets section. Instead, this is an area on the right hand side, with multiple sections for different theme location areas.

Inactive Widgets

The Inactive Widgets section starts off as an empty section underneath the Available Widgets section. This section is used to store Widgets while you don't want them to be displayed on the page.

Available Widgets

These Widgets listed here are blank templates for showing information on your pages.

Drag them over to one of the sections to the right to create a new Widget.
